This is How We Do It!
To start, we use a degreasing cleanser to clean the cabinets thoroughly. We recommend Krud Kutter or Spray 9 for best results. It's important to avoid certain cleaners like TSP, Dawn, Denatured Alcohol, Ammonia & Water, Amway Kitchen Cleaner, 409, and Scotchbright sponges, as they can damage the finish on your cabinets.
Once cleaned, we rinse the cabinets with water and neutralize them with a 50/50 combination of denatured alcohol and water to ensure all the cleanser is removed. After letting the cabinets dry completely, we sand them with 150-180 grit sandpaper. We use sponge sanding pads for the grooves and fold up small pieces of sandpaper to ensure we reach every nook and cranny.
We also make sure to vacuum up all the dust and wipe the cabinets with a microfiber cloth before moving onto priming. We use Zinsser BIN Shellac Primer for solid wood cabinets as it blocks tannins and provides excellent adhesion. We sand the cabinets with a 220 grit sanding block between coats of primer, and apply a thin layer of primer with a Purdy or Whizz roller. For best results, we recommend using a foam roller, but be sure to remove any lint or fuzz before painting.
After applying another coat of primer, we sand the cabinets again with a 220-320 grit sanding block and clean them with a damp cloth and paintbrush. Then, we're ready to paint! We recommend using satin or semi-gloss paint and spraying it on or using a Purdy or Whizz black foam roller. We apply thin layers of paint to ensure an even finish.
We use Benjamin Moore Advance or Sherwin Williams Emerald Urethane for painting, but we're happy to use other paint brands if you prefer. We sand the cabinets with a 320-400 grit sanding block before applying the final coat of paint. After the cabinets are dry, we'll make sure to clean up any mess and leave your kitchen looking like new!
